St. Nicholas in the Czech Home
On St. Nicholas day, the patron saint of the children, the youngest members of Czech Beseda Rijeka gathered in the Czech Home in Rijeka to show what they learned in the past year and celebrate their day. Their short program was shown in the rehearsal room, chosen for this occasion because it is easier to heat up this small space than the big main stage. The rehearsal room was crowded, as all the parents, grandparents and other family members, but also other Czech Beseda Rijeka members, came to see the children perform.
The program started at 4 PM. Children from Czech language class came to the stage first with a short play about a snowman. They showed how much their learned so far, their pronunciation of Czech words better than that of many local Czech people who speak archaic or distorted Czech language. After that, the youngest Czech Beseda Rijeka dance group "Račići" danced several dances and gave a short play in both Czech and Croatian languages. Their coach Vladimira Marinković wrote the script and prepared choreography for this performance.
At the end of the program, St. Nicholas brought gifts for all children. Everyone who participated in the program, as well as other children that come to Beseda, received sweet packages, as they were all good this year. For their work with the children, St. Nick also rewarded their Czech teacher Erika Klepo, dance teacher Vladimira Marinković, and Božo Selichar who put great effort into making St. Nicholas' walking stick. Snježana Husak played the part of St. Nicholas on this occasion.
Celebration continued with home made cookies and juices. It was wonderful to see so many children in our Home, as their presence means that Czech language and culture will survive in this area in the future.
