Czech Beseda Rijeka won first prize at the Prague festival of Czech people from abroad
The second Festival of Czech people living outside the Czech Republic took place on September 18 – 21 in Prague. About twenty folklore and singing groups participated, coming from Ukraine, Romania, Poland, Slovakia and the United States (Texas). Czech Beseda Rijeka represented the Czech community from Croatia. Programs went on in the outstanding Martinicka palace at the Hradcany square, at the entry to the Prague castle area and Hradčany.
The Croatian Czech community showed their best at this festival. Singing group Nostalgia, dance group of adults and dance ensemble Riječke Ribice performed during the three festival nights. Judges decided that performances of folklore groups from Rijeka deserved the first prize of the festival and awarded them certificates and a plaque for outstanding art impression.
During this visit to Prague, the group from Rijeka was invited to a reception in Valdstejn palace, the representative area of the Parliament Senate of the Czech Republic. After the reception, they had the chance to visit a world known horticultural monument, the Valdstejn garden surrounded by three palaces that house the Czech Parliament.
The festival ended with a parade of all participants in traditional costumes on the Hradcany square. The parade went towards the statue of the first president of Czech Republic Tomas Garique Masaryk in front of the entrance to Prague castle. There, everyone sang Masaryk's favorite song "Ach synku, synku." Award ceremony followed, and at the end of this wonderful gathering everyone sang two more Czech songs.
