President of Czech Beseda Rijeka Fanika Husak receives the Czech Republic Senate medal

The sitting Commission for Czech people abroad of the Czech Republic Senate, headed by its president Josef Zoser, visited Croatia on July 16 – 20, 2008. Czech Senators were guests of the Czech Ambassador to Croatia Karel Kühnl, met with minority representatives in the Croatian Parliament, and visited Czech Beseda Zagreb, Czech Beseda Rijeka and the traditional festivity of all Czech people living in Croatia, the harvest festival in Daruvar. Besides Mr. Zoser, the members of the delegation were also senators Tomáš Grulich and Otakar Veřovský, Commission Secretary Bronislava Hegrová, and representative of the Ministry of foreign affairs Mr. Eisenbruck.

Tour of the Czech Home

Members of the delegation stayed in Rijeka on July 18 and 19. They visited Czech consulate and toured the city. During they stay in Rijeka they were also accompanied by Petr Štěpánek, secretary of Czech Embassy in Croatia and Zdenka Čuhnil, representative of Czech and Slovak minorities in Croatian Parliament.

In the afternoon and evening, Mr. Štěpánek, Mrs. Čuhnil and Czech Consul in Rijeka Jindra Malá visited members of Czech minority in their new home. Besides members of Czech Beseda Rijeka, they were greeted by president of the City council Dorotea Pešić Bukovac, vice president of the County council Sonja Brozović Cuculić, the head of the County Office Branko Škrobonja and editor of the city web portal Ivica Nikolac.

During this visit president Zoser handed the Medal and charter of Czech Republic Senate for work and contribution to Czech community in Croatia to Czech Beseda Rijeka president Fanika Husak. It was a touching moment, a pleasant surprise to Mrs. Husak and others. Everybody agreed that the medal was well deserved.

"This acknowledgement is a big honor for me, as well as the Award of the City of Rijeka I received two years ago," said Mrs. Husak when receiving the medal. "At the same time it is an honor given to all members of Czech Beseda Rijeka who gave priceless contributions to the construction of the Czech Home in Rijeka."

Mrs. Pešić Bukovac spoke of coexistence and tolerance of the people of Rijeka and promised that the City will give another 100,000 Kuna before the end of the year to install heating in the Czech Home, rounding the total City contribution to 2 million Kuna. Mrs. Čuhnil thanked everyone who helped Czech Beseda Rijeka to build the Home, since this contribution of the City, County and both countries will benefit all Czech people in Croatia. Mr. Zoser said he was pleasantly surprised by the building as well as the attitude of the City and the County towards the local Czech community, thanked them for understanding, help and tolerance, and promised that the Czech Republic will try to find a way to further help the construction.

After the representatives of all delegations exchanged gifts, they had dinner and spent a pleasant evening in the new building. The party lasted long into the night because the guests were spending the night in the Czech Home, so they didn't have to hurry to hotels for the night.
