Czech Beseda Rijeka in Virovitica at the "Spring Sounds of Jan Vlašimsky"
Czech Beseda Virovitica organized the event called "Spring Sounds of Jan Vlašimsky," held for the sixth time on May 6-29 in Virovitica. Jan Vlašimsky was a Czech musitian who worked in Virovitica from 1886 until 1942. He was born on May 22, 1867 in Czech town Všenj near Turnov. As a part of this year’s “Spring Sounds of Jan Vlašimsky,” May 18 was the Day of Czech Culture.
The Day of Czech Culture in Virovitica started at 10 AM with a round table discussion on the life and work of Jan Vlašimsky in the city library. It continued with a quiz about Jan Vlašimsky for elementary school children, followed by music program.
The main culture program was planned for 3PM on the main city square, but the weather forced it to be moved to the Culture Home. The move did not diminish the beauty and quality of the program, but the intimate atmosphere contributed to the good mood among performers.
The brass band from Všenj, long time friends of Czech Beseda Virovitica, participated in the afternoon program. They were followed by the members of Czech Beseda Prekoprakra. This society with the longest tradition in Croatia was well presented by the youngest dancers, singing choir and an older dance group. Czech Beseda Rijeka participated with the dance group of adults and singing group Nostalgia. The dances, mostly married couples, performed 5 dances prepared by choreographer Eva Zetova from Prague and rehearsed by Snježana Husak. The singing group sung 5 songs, lead by their conductor Anton Rehak. After them, brass band and young singers from Virovitica gave a short but very good performance.
Mrs. Zdenka Čuhnjil, representative of Czech and Slovak minorities in Croatian Parliament, was there to watch the show, accompanied by representatives of the Czech Union in Croatia and Virovitičko-podravska County. After the three-hour program, there was a plentiful dinner and coming together of all program participants and guests.
