Czech Beseda Rijeka annual assembly
The regular non-electoral annual assembly of Czech Beseda Rijeka took place on Sunday, March 30, in the unfinished Czech Home building. About 90 members attended the assembly, lead by the working presidency: Snježana Husak, Josip Ružička and Slavko Horaček. We were happy to welcome also some distinguished guests: Czech and Slovak minority representative in Croatian Parliament Mrs. Zdenka Čuhnjil, member of the Czech Union presidency Mr. Damir Malina, delegation from the Slovak society of Rijeka, delegation of the Pehlin district committee, cultural society Zvir from Jelenje and our friends from Ravna Gora.
President Fanika Husak gave the report on the work done in the past year. Since you could already read about everything we did on our web site and in our bulletin, we will not go into details here. The President thanked all the members and friends who volunteered to work on the Czech Home construction – so far their contribution is estimated at about 400.000 Kuna. She also praised all the members of all dance, theatre, and singing groups as well as the journalist section. She thanked Mrs. Čuhnjil, the City of Rijeka, Primorsko-goranska County, the Czech Union in Croatia, Croatian National Minorities Council, Czech and Croatian governments, and all our friends and supporters for their help and understanding. She was also very pleased to say that Czech language classes are now organized in elementary schools in Rijeka.
Leaders of all groups (S. Husak, J. Matković, T. Rehak, S. Herceg, J. Herceg and V. Valenčić) spoke about the activities of each group in the past year. They all said that working in our own space, although unfinished and unheated, is a big pleasure for all members and gives them extra motivation for their work. They said they were pleased with the results of their work and invited all members to work even harder, and everyone else to join the groups according to their preferences. The puppet theatre did not work last year, but its members have the intention to restart their work and big plans for the future. The journalist group (bulletin and web) asked the other members for their contribution. The members were informed that the copy machine is old and cannot be fixed any more, so it is necessary to buy a new one.
During the discussion, one member expressed his concerns about the management of the Czech Home. He thought that running such a big and expensive structure could lead to some unpleasant situations for the Beseda members. He fears that the space could be rented out without the approval of Beseda executive committee. As it turned out, this member was not well informed, and therefore he was worried for no reason.
Everyone present at the assembly welcomed the suggestion to stop all the activities and work on the Home for a few days and take the time to revisit some of our many friends in the Czech Republic. Later in the discussion the members were informed that we received 4 PCs as donations. The PCs have been set up and are working, and one of them also has Internet access.
After the working part of the assembly, there was a short program featuring the youngest dance group "Male Ribice" and the theatre group acting out Carlo Goldoni's play "In love."
After the program, a newly finished room in the Czech Home was opened – the "small hall" under the stage that will serve as the rehearsal room for all dance, singing and theatre groups, as well as for meetings, lectures and other purposes. Since the room also has bathrooms and a small kitchen next to it, we will not have to open the main stage, big hall and the entire Home for our daily activities. Mr. Arnošt Landa, a Czech Beseda Rijeka honorary member, formally opened the room.
Members of the Czech Beseda Rijeka and their guests were treated to a light dinner and great cakes in the newly opened room. They stayed to chat over drinks and coffee for a long time after the official part of the evening was over.
