Project "Culture without Borders" in Croatia – "Don Quijote de la Ancha" by Czech theatre Klauniky from Brno
The international project "Culture without borders with EU" of the Czech theatre "Divadlo Klauniky Brno" came to Croatia this year for the first time, after completing the project in Slovakia, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Kazakhstan. An outstanding theatre play was chosen for this project, the "Don Quijote de la Ancha," a comedy that came into being under the lead of director Boleslav Polívka, and celebrated its 3000th reprise this year.
The idea of bringing this project to Croatia started two years ago, when "Divadlo Klauniky" came to give the pilot phase performance to Czech minorities in Lipovljani and Daruvar, Croatia, and Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a result, an active cooperation developed between the theatre and Czech Beseda Daruvar. A year later, member of Daruvar theatre group Ljiljana Štekoviæ attended a seminar in the Czech Republic, where she rehearsed one of the lead parts in the show, and started preparation of Croatian version of the show.
This distinctive adaptation of the destinies of Don Quijote and his faithful companion Sancho Panza abounds in humor, overstatements, fantasy and mystification. Boleslav Polívka, the director, author, mime, poet of body and soul, formally chose the path of didactical clownship.
The contrast of these two levels produces a series of humorous situations, that perpetuate a new relationship between professor (who plays Don Quijote), teacher Ancha (who represents Sancho) and other characters (e.g. princess Dulcinea). The entire play almost comes into being in front of the eyes of the audience and with their active participation.
For the first time, this year Croatian citizens and their visitors had the chance to see the show "Don Quijote de la Ancha," starring world-known stilt-actor Lenoire Montaine, in Czech-Croatian version. The show was given on August 2 at 9 PM at the City Square in Umag, on August 3 at 9.30 PM at the summer terrace "Monte" in Rovinj, and on August 6 at 9 PM in Povljane on the island of Pag.
The project will continue on, and this legendary show will surely be played in other Croatian towns as well.
