Visit and donation from Ostrava
It is a well-known fact that Czech Beseda Rijeka has had dear and selfless friends in Czech city Ostrava for many years. Mayors of Ostrava municipalities and the Mayor of the City of Ostrava have shown their fondness and friendship on many occasions, and not only formally. Dance group "Rybičky" has performed at folklore festivals twice, mayors of municipalities have welcomed about 50 Czech people from Rijeka during their visit to Ostrava and organized a seminar for Czech teachers from Croatia. Every time we see the growing construction of Czech Home in Rijeka we remember that all the iron built into the building was donated by Ostrava ironworks Vítkovice.
Still, our friends from Ostrava never seize to surprise us with new good deeds. This time it was Vítkovice women’s society, lead by Mayor Kutěj’s wife, the principle of Vítkovice school, and the administration of local library in Vítkovice. These altruistic friends of Czech people in Rijeka prepared a new donation of Czech books. They not only prepared the present, but also personally delivered it to Rijeka. About three hundred books, both new and used, are a priceless gift that will enrich the library of Czech Beseda Rijeka and contribute to preservation of Czech language among the Czech people of Rijeka.
Our friends from Vítkovice spent first two days of their stay in Croatia in Opatija, and on Saturday, May 27, they visited Czech Beseda Rijeka. They first went to see the construction site of the Czech Culture Centre in Rijeka. They were surprised by the size of the building and the construction phase. Mr. Petr Kutěj, Mayor of Vítkovice, who has been monitoring the construction from its beginning, expressed his delight with the progress and quality of the work done.
Czech Beseda Rijeka prepared the lunch for its visitors in the "borrowed" space of Pehlin Culture Home, hoping that the next time we will be able to welcome our guests in the new Czech Home. A few hours with our friends from Ostrava went by fast, with good food, cakes, drinks and song. We parted hoping and promising to continue our cooperation and meet again in Rijeka and in Ostrava. We are very grateful to our friends for their gifts, understanding and kindness.
