Czech Minister of Culture Visiting Rijeka
Mr. Vítězslav Jandák, Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic, visited Rijeka on March 14, 2006, accompanied by his wife. He met with delegates of Primorsko-Goranska County and the City of Rijeka, and later he spent some time with the members of the Czech minority in Rijeka.
Accompanying Czech Minister were Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Croatia Dr. Petr Buriánek, advisors in the Czech Ministry of Culture Mr. Martin Bezouška and Mr. Stanislav Karabec, as well as some Czech Ambassy employees.
During their visit in Rijeka, the Czech delegation first met with the County vice president Mr. Luka Denona, and then the Mayor of Rijeka Mr. Vojko Obersnel. Also present at the latter meeting were the head of City of Rijeka Department of Culture Ms. Ivanka Persić, member of the Rijeka City Council Mr.Bože Mimica, and president and vice president of Czech Beseda Rijeka Mrs. Fanyka Husak and Mrs. Snježana Herceg.
The Mayor of Rijeka greeted the guests, spoke of the long traditional cooperation of Croatia and Rijeka with the Czech Republic and the cities in the Czech Republic , and of the possibilities for future cooperation.
During both his official visits in Rijeka, Minister Jandák spoke of the importance of signing the bilateral cultural cooperation agreement that will take place in April of this year. The Czech Republic is interested in the exchange of students and professors of art history and archaeology, who showed an interest for restoration of Croatian cultural and historic heritage. The Czech Minister did not forget to mention that in the past, Rijeka was often a window into the outside world for the Czech people.
In his speech, the mayor of Rijeka accentuated his satisfaction with the activities of Czech Beseda Rijeka, the excellent cooperation of the Czech people of Rijeka with the City council and administration, and the building of the Czech Culture Center that is financially supported by the City, the County, the Republic of Croatia and recently also by the Czech Republic.
The president of Czech Beseda Rijeka Fanyka Husak spoke about the understanding and help received from the City of Rijeka during Beseda's cultural manifestations and actions and the financial help received for the construction of Czech Home. She used this opportunity to thank the mayor and the City of Rijeka once again.
After the official meeting with the Mayor, the members of the Czech delegation lead by minister Jandák and heads of the City Council lead by mayor Obersnel visited the construction site of the Czech Culture Center in Rijeka. Eagerly awaiting at the site were many members of the Czech Beseda Rijeka, who also prepared snacks. The guests took a tour of the building, and minister Jandák, who still is a theater actor in his heart, immediately "tried out" the stage. In his mind he already saw Czech theatre, dance and music ensembles, thinking about the possibilities for cultural exchange. Czech Beseda Rijeka members will long remember the pleasant moments spent with minister Jandák, his wife, and all the members of the Czech delegation.
