Representatives of Czech minority in Croatia meet with president Vaclav Klaus
The president of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus and his wife Livie made an official visit to Croatia on September 6 through 8. They spent part of this time meeting with representatives of the Czech minority in Croatia. The meeting on September 7 was set up by Czech ambassador Petr Burianek and his wife Zuzana in the residence of the Czech embassy in Zagreb.
About twenty representatives of the Czech minority in Croatia came to meet the Czech president on this occasion, among them the Croatian Parliament representative for Czech and Slovak minorities Zdenka Čuhnjil and the president of the Czech Union in Croatia Leonora Janota, and a few presidents of Czech Besedas and representatives in National Minority Councils in some cities and counties.
The president and the first lady were welcomed by ambassador Burianek on behalf of the Embassy, and Leonora Janota on behalf of the Czech people living in Croatia. After that, president Klaus expressed his satisfaction for meeting with representatives of the well organized and active Czech minority in Croatia again. This is the third time Mr. Klaus officially visited Croatia – once he was here as Czech prime minister, and once as the president of Czech Parliament. Although he learned a lot about the good image and activities of Czech people in Croatia during his previous visits, president Klaus expressed once again his satisfaction and excitement by the activities of this small community, of which he heard many praises in high political circles. Among else, he said he was glad the Czech minority was so visible and well organized, contributing to good relations between the two countries, and that we take such good care of preserving the Czech identity, language and cultural heritage. After president Klaus, Mrs. Livie Klaus also spoke to Croatian Czech people very emotionally.
Representing Czech Beseda Rijeka, the Beseda's president Mrs. Fanyka Husak and representative in the County National Minority Council Mr. Anton Rehak were there to meet the president. After they came back from Zagreb , Mrs. Husak said she was glad that two members of Czech Beseda Rijeka had a chance to inform president Klaus about the activities of our organization, and that she was thrilled by his interest in everything the Czech people in Rijeka have accomplished. She presented several photographs to Mr. and Mrs. Klaus, depicting our involvement, the building of Czech Culture Center in Rijeka and the great cooperation with the City of Rijeka and Primorsko-goranska County , as well as their encouragement of our culture activities and help with the building of the Czech Home.
